Dried gourd dippers were readily made in North America by both Native Americans and others. An opening was cut into the gourd and the contents were scraped out. The outside was then cleaned and dried.

Dippers were used much like a ladle and could also be made from such things as burls, coconuts, and coquilla nuts.
