This mold was used for baking almond cakes in the 1800s.

Molds are not a necessary part of cooking but used to form food into fancy shapes.

There were a wide variety of molds, e.g., aspics, jellies, custards and puddings, ices, mousses, vegetable or rice, cake, and so on.
