Variety of Graters

image of the object

This selection of tin hand graters originates from around the early 1900s. However, this styles of tin graters date back 200 years.

Like the graters of today, food was pressed against the metal side of a grater and dragged back and forth against it. The food would then be shredded or "grated" through the small holes in the metal.

The top left grater, unlike the others, provides both coarse and fine perforations, making it more similar to the graters available today. This variation in the perforations allows more control over how coarse or fine the food is grated.
